2011 CTS-V Coupe Race Car

The 2011 SCCA World Challenge series opens March 25-27 in St. Petersburg, Florida

It's believed by many automakers that involvement in motorsports improves not just race cars, but road cars as well. To that end, Cadillac will be returning to the Sports Car Club of America's World Challenge series in 2011 with a race-prepped CTS-V Coupe which General Motors will display at the 2011 Detroit auto show.
Cadillac is no stranger to the SCCA World Challenge, having contested the GT Class series in a Cadillac CTS-V sedan during the 2004-2007 seasons. Cadillac even won the Manufacturer's Championship in 2005 and 2007, also scoring the Driver's Championship in 2005 with driver Andy Pilgrim. Pilgrim is back for the 2011 effort, alongside fellow American driver Johnny O'Connell, himself a motorsports veteran.
Pratt & Miller, an engineering firm in Michigan that has also been responsible for Chevrolet's all-conquering C5.R and C6.R race cars, along with the new Corvette GT2 class American Le Mans Series racers and road-going C6RS, will be co-developing the CTS-V Coupe race car with GM's performance department. Like many others competing in production-based series, General Motors says it will use what it learns to further the development of its street cars.
"The SCCA World Challenge lends itself to a natural transfer of knowledge," said Jim Campbell, GM vice president for Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. "The series will become a key test-bed for Cadillac. We anticipate using what we learn on the racetrack to ensure the V-Series stays on the cutting edge of performance.

Chevy Unveils Special "Carbon Edition" Corvette

Z06 Special Edition Is Made For The Track....

GM is set to launch a new special edition of the Corvette, directly targeting fans of the iconic sports car who want something that their neighbor won't have. The limited edition car, called the "Carbon Edition," is not just an appearance package but a truly focused track machine that we can't wait to get our hands on.First, a bit of history. Back in 2001, Chevrolet decided to revive an old high performance Corvette option code, giving folks who wanted a more track-ready version of the 'Vette a more focused model known as the "Z06." That Z06 was based on the fifth generation Corvette platform (C5) and was only offered in the hardtop or "fixed roof coupe" body style. It featured an upgraded suspension, bigger wheels and tires, and a few other performance tweaks. Initially offered with a 385-horsepower engine upgrade, it eventually received the LS6 engine rated at 405 horsepower. Chevy sold more than 28,000 of them before the C5 platform was replaced in 2005.
In 2006, Corvette fans rejoiced when Chevrolet introduced another Z06 model based on the C6, or sixth generation platform. It had a new 7.0-liter, 427 cubic inch V8 with 100 more horsepower than the strongest C5 Z06. It also featured a lighter aluminum frame, balsa wood/carbon fiber composite floors and a magnesium alloy engine cradle to save even more weight. The C6 Z06 officially tipped the scales at just 3180 pounds, giving it world-class performance. And with its sub-$70,000 pricetag it instantly put the Corvette at the top of the bang-for-your-buck charts for supercars.
The Z06 stood its ground, proudly representing America as the highest performance Corvette ever ... until Chevy introduced the even more powerful ZR1 in 2009. The ZR1 took the Corvette even further up the performance rankings, with its supercharged 638-horsepower V8, carbon-ceramic brakes, carbon-fiber body panels and active suspension distancing it from its sibling Z06. It was also $30,000 more expensive than the Z06, but its performance spoke for itself. Z06 lovers wanted some of those upgrades for themselves, but Chevrolet didn't offer them on the Z06 ... until now.

2011 Vauxhall Corsa VXR Blue Edition for the UK

Vauxhall has unveiled a brand new limited edition hot hatch – the Vauxhall Corsa VXR Blue Edition – for the UK market.Although this particular special edition variant won’t make its way Down Under, we’re beginning to get excited about the prospect of exactly what vehicles we will see when Vauxhall’s sister brand Opel launches in Australia in 2012.

Last week, Opel CEO Nick Reilly announced the German manufacturer would become a stand-alone brand in Australia, reintroducing a number of premium General Motors products to the local market.

The mid/large Insignia, small Astra and light Corsa (previously known as Barina) will all be among the initial offerings when Opel opens its showrooms – likely to be later next year.

The Vauxhall VXR range is equivalent to Opel’s OPC (Opel Performance Centre), and introducing the halo cars to Australia could be just what the fledging brand needs to attract attention early on.

Currently, OPC tunes its own versions of the Corsa, Insignia and Insignia Sports Tourer for European markets.
This particular Vauxhall Corsa VXR Blue Edition takes on the styling of the recently updated Corsa range.

Included in the package is the striking Arden Blue metallic paint, 18-inch alloy wheels, dark tinted glass, bespoke interior air vents and Recaro seats. Blue highlights can be found throughout the interior, including the stitching on the leather steering wheel and seats.

Like the standard Corsa VXR, the Blue Edition comes with lowered sports suspension, uprated brakes and switchable ESP.

Powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, the hot Corsa produces 141kW of power and more than 260Nm of torque, combining for a 0-100km/h time of 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 225km/h.

With a starting price of £19,425 ($31,050), the Vauxhall Corsa VXR Blue Edition should give the Volkswagen Polo GTI and the MINI John Cooper Works a run for their money when it hits UK showrooms in February.

2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG Promotional Footage

Normally, promo footage is relatively boring and features loads of panning, swooping shots of the car driving along a postcard-perfect strip of ocean road to the graceful background of The Sound of Music. Mercedes-Benz has done it a bit differently with the upcoming 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG.

This promotional footage, just released into cyberspace, features a more raw and realistic approach to demonstrating the car’s character, while still showcasing plenty of the car’s new body design. And it’s mostly footage of the car being driven on a race track, no less.

That means we get a snippet of the awesome new 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 under the hood, which creates 410kW of power in full AMG Performance Package trim (386kW for standard AMG).

This new engine is quite remarkable as it comes with a fuel consumption rating of 9.9L/100km – not bad for a large sedan, excellent for a stonking twin-turbo V8.

2011 Lexus IS F Club Sport editions unveiled at Tokyo Auto Salon

The Lexus IS F sports sedan has been given a racing makeover by Lexus and Toyota Racing Development (TRD), and the final products have just been unveiled at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Salon. Introducing the Lexus IS F Circuit Club Sport Racer and Lexus IS F Club Performance Accessory.

Although the name might be a bit long-winded, the IS F CCSR is a highly stripped out version of the IS F and features a number of lightweight revisions.
The most obvious of which includes a carbon fibre rear wing, front spoiler, bonnet and boot lid. Inside, even more carbon is used for the dashboard layout, centre console and door trims. There’s also the inclusion of a roll cage inside along with race seats and harnesses.

Mechanical revision are just as extensive on the IS F CCSR, as all-new sports suspension is used, as well as a proper mechanical limited-slip differential and an uprated brake package.

If you are perhaps after something a little less highly-strung, Lexus and TRD also showcased the Lexus IS F Club Performance Accessory. This version still gets plenty of carbon fibre detail, in the form of a new bonnet, rear wing and front chin spoiler, only it’s all a bit less extravagant.

There’s also plenty of carbon used throughout the interior, such as carbon seats (covered in orange leather), a carbon centre fascia and carbon paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. The friendlier version still gets sports suspension, a mechanical LSD and uprated brakes as well.

Both cars do without any engine performance upgrades as the 5.0-litre, 311kW V8 already generates ample output.

Overall, the cars present a more active, athletic personality for the luxury sports sedan, and would be perfect for the track day enthusiast or weekend racer.

Engine of Ferrari F430 Spider

The F430 Spider is powered by the new 90 degree V8 featuring Ferrari's traditionally uncompromising design approach with a flat-plane crank (180 degrees between throws). The improvement in terms of performance, weight and reduction of overall dimensions is yet another result of Ferrari applying its wealth to F1 experience to its road cars: + 25% (465 Nm at 5,250 rpm, 80% of which is already available at 3,500 rpm) and powered by 23% (490 hp/360 kW @ 8,500 rpm).
Electronic Differential:

The E-Diff or electronic differential, the real new feature on F430, is now standard equipment on the Spider. On the track, the E-Diff guarantees maximum grip out of bends, eliminating wheel spin. On the road it is a formidable technological refinement that improves roadholding.

The Ferrari 308 Introduction

The 308 GTB was Ferrari's first two-seat V8 road car. Made available to the public in 1975, it was the long awaited successor to the incomparable Dino 246 GT. The 308 series was a new beginning for the company as the premier builder of exotic sports cars for road use. As such, the 308 was designed to epitomize the sports car in its era. It did so admirably, and remains perhaps the most influential enthusiast car in history. The 308 is the car against which every subsequentsports car has been measured, upon which every Ferrari V8 sports and racing car has been based, and the car that brought Ferrari from the pinnacle of elite car-culture recognition into the minds of the general public. 25 years later, the shape and sound of the 308 is still "Ferrari" in the minds of many people.

The 308 came in two body styles, over three generations. The GTB, or berlinetta body, had a solid roof and slightly greater rigidity. The 308 GTB debuted in 1975. The GTS, or spider body, had a removable roof panel and first appeared in late 1977. The light roof panel was made of covered fiberglass. With windows down and roof off, the popular GTS was open from door to door. The three generations consist of the 308, 308i and 308qv. Apart from minor styling and accent changes, their engines differentiate the generations. The original 308 was carburetted and available from 1975 to 1980. The 1981-82 308i was fuel injected. The 308qv, for quattrovalvole, was fuel injected with four valves per cylinder, and was made from 1982 to 1985.

The 308 allowed its driver to experience a racecar thrill, and it also invited the passenger to relax in comfort and enjoy the ride. The 308 was by no means the firstFerrari to offer sumptuous surroundings with full leather upholstery and stylish appointments, but it offered far more for the casual driver
